May 3 – 10, 2015, is National Drinking Water Week making it a great time for Mesa County Health Department to remind residents with private wells and cisterns to test water supplies.
Testing for bacteria is the only reliable way to know if your water is safe. The look, taste or smell of water cannot indicate if it contains disease-causing organisms.
Late spring or early summer are the best times to test your well or cistern, since coliform bacteria – a basic indicator of water contamination- is most likely to show up during wet weather.
Contaminated water supplies can lead to recurring gastrointestinal ailments.
The Mesa County Health Department Regional Lab offers affordable water testing. Visit health.mesacounty.us/lab or call 970-248-6999 for more information.
